Common usesBarley is demulcent and is useful in fever, stomach disorders and diabetes. It is useful as an anticarcinogenic. It is easily digestible and used as a diet of invalids and convalescents.
Powdered and parched grains are much employed in the form of a gruel in cases of painful and atonic dyspepsia, ulcers, burns, anaemia and urinary discharges.
Decoction of barley, is a mucilaginous drink useful in cases requiring demulcent treatment. It is given in feverish disorders, inflammation of the membranes of chest, diarrhoea/diarrhea and catarrhal disorders of bowels. It is especially valued in infant feeding as it prevents the formation of large milk curds.
Barley water with honey is prescribed for cough and in conjunction with gum arabic it is used for soothing irritation of the bladder and urinary passages.

- Barley contains 4 classes of proteins: Albumin, globulin, prolamin (Hordein) and glutelin(Hordenin).

- Raw barley contains diastase, oxidases, catalase, peroxidase, phytase, lichenase, cytases, mannase, cellobiase and mannobiase.

- Pearl barley contains: thiamine, 50mu-g; riboflavin, 10mu-g; nicotinic acid, 3mg/100g and minerals.

Pharmacological effectIt has been proved that barley diets substantially lower plasma cholesterol in humans due to the presence of beta-glucans in them. Tocoterpinols may also effectively suppress cholesterol synthesis. Thus barley diets prevent hypercholesterolaemia and heart diseases. The absorption rations of the different constituents of pearl barley as determined by trials on human subjects are protein 81.15+_4.95; fat 66.82+_4.86; carbohydrates 98.36+_1.29, fibre 46.6+_4.80 and ash 78.32+_2.13%.

Traditional usage1. After anointing with ghee washed hundred times paste of parched barley should be applied for fever with burning sensation. In Pitta fever, cold infusion of parched barley, Usira (Vetiveria zizaniodes), Lajjalu (Mimosa pudica) and Gambhari fruit (Gmelina arborea) mixed with honey is useful.

2. Food of the patient of diabetes should consist of barley predominantly and one suffering from Kapha type should take various edible preparations of barley mixed with honey. Again barley should be kept overnight in decoction of Triphala* (a group of three fruits) and saturating preparation made thereof and mixed with honey should be taken with sour gruel.

3. Edibles prepared of barley should be taken regularly in skin diseases.

4. Powder of barley mixed with Amalaka (Phyllanthus emblica) is the best remedy for obesity.

5. One suffering from asthma should take saturating diet of barley impregnated many times with juice of buds of Arka (Calotropis procera).

6. Smoke should be inhaled of parched barley flour mixed with ghee and oil. It alleviates coryza as well as cough and hiccough.

7. In vomiting, fever, Pitta colic, severe burning sensation and excessive thirst liquid gruel of barley mixed with honey and cooled should be taken.

8. Water boiled with dehusked barley, Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) and Amalaka and mixed with Trijata** (a group of three aromatics) and honey checks vomiting caused by acid gastritis.

9. Liquid gruel of slightly parched whole barley, cooled and mixed with honey and sugar should be given or that of red rice or Kodrava (Paspalum scrobiculatum) may be given for thirst.

10. In condition of constipation, the patient of intestinal tumour/tumor should eat barley with milk.

11. barley flour mixed with buttermilk and Yavaksara (alkali of barley) and heated should be applied on abdomen. It relieves pain.

12. In filaria caused by Kapha one should regularly use barley, decoction with honey, Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) in increasing doses and local application of mustard and root of Duralabha (Tragia involucrata).

13. Wounds which are painful, hard, stiffened and non-discharging should be pasted frequently with barley powder mixed with ghee.

14. Barley powder, Madhuka (liquorice) and Tila (sesame) pounded together are mixed with ghee should be applied warm. It removes burning sensation and pain.

15. Poultice of the powders of barley, wheat and black gram is applied for pressing the wound.

16. Ash of barley mixed with oil should be applied to all types of burns. It promotes healing.

17. One suffering from anaemia should use the formulation mentioned for oedema particularly diet of red rice and barley.

Triphala*, a group of three fruits of Amalaka, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki is good apetitive, improves the eyesight and is beneficial in chronic intermittent fever.

Trijata** refers to a combination of three aromatics, Tvak (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), Ela (Elettaria cardamomum), and Patra (Cinnamomum tamala). It is used to augment the fragrance and to promote the appetite and digestion.
