Traditional usage1. Seed kernel of Jambu (Syzygium cumini), Amra (Mango - Mangifera indica), Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Kapittha (Feronia limonia) and Sunthi (dry ginger) - these should be taken with liquid gruel in case of diarrhoea/diarrhea.

2. Decoction of Bilva and seed kernel of Amra mixed with honey and sugar checks vomiting and diarrhoea/diarrhea.

3. Tender leaves of Amra and Kapittha fruit are pounded together and taken with rice water in case of diarrhoea/diarrhea.

4. Bark of Sallaki (Boswellia serrata), Badari (Ziziphus mauritiana), Jambu, Priyala (Buchanania lanzan), Amra and Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) mixed with honey and taken with milk checks haemorrhage/hemorrhage in diarrhoea/diarrhea.

5. Decoction of the seed kernel of Amra and Bilva is added honey and sugar. It controls severe vomiting and diarrhoea/diarrhea.

6. Juice of Amra bark extracted by heating is added with oil and taken. It alleviates diarrhoea/diarrhea with blood and mucous.

7. In intrinsic haemorrhage/hemorrhage, one should take cold infusion of Amra, Jambu and Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) added with honey.

8. In epistaxis, the juice of mango seed is instilled into nostrils.

9. Linctus made of mango seed kernel, parched paddy and rock salt with honey checks vomiting.

10. Leaves and root of Bijapura (Citrus medica), Amra and Jambu are cooked by closed heating. Intake of the juice so obtained is taken with honey. It alleviates severe vomiting.

11. Decoction of Amra and Jambu added with honey alleviates all types of vomiting and thirst.

12. Roasted tender fruits of Amra are added with water and mixed with Jiraka (cumin seed), salt and Marica (Piper nigrum). It should be taken in proper dose by one afflicted with sunstroke.

13. Juice of ripe mango added with honey is useful in enlargement of spleen.

14. Bark of mango is pounded and added with milk and sugar. This is efficacious in gonorrhoea/gonorrhea if taken for a fortnight.

15. Pulp of mango fruit mixed with rock salt is rubbed with water in a copper vessel. This is applied on skin in psoriasis.

16. Equal powders of mango seed and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) are pounded together with milk and applied to the scalp in case of dandruff.

17. Paste is made of mango seed, honey and camphor and applied to vagina. It makes the vagina contracted and firm.

18. In stomatitis of children, seed kernel of mango, lauha bhasma (processed iron powder), red ochre and Rasanjana (a product of Berberis aristata) mixed with honey is efficacious.

19. In indigestion caused by eating fish and meat, unripe fruit and seed of mango are useful respectively.

20. Ghee cooked with the decoction of Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) leaves and Amra root alleviates all types of oedema, intestinal tumour/tumor, ascitic types, splenomegaly, piles and dyspepsia.

21. Hot infusion prepared of tender leaves of Amra and Jambu, leaf buds and hanging roots of Vata (Ficus benghalensis) and Usira (Vetiveria zizanioides) mixed with honey allays fever.

CommentsIf taken in excess it creates indigestion, intermittant fever, blood disorders, ascitic types and eye diseases.

The juice of ripe fruit is spread on a cloth and dried. This is called Amravarta. This is good for thirst, vomiting, Vata Pitta and is a laxative.

Amra is included in Mutrasangrahaniya, Purisasangrahaniya, Chardi nigrahana, Hrdya, Kasayaskandha, Amlaskandha groups of Caraka.
