Common uses | Dried fruits and seeds are prescribed in diarrhoea/diarrhea of children, dysentery, indigestion, loss of appetite, leucorrhoea/leucorrhea, diabetes, asthma and skin diseases. Juice of ripe fruit is made into vinegar and used as stomachic, carminative and diuretic. Seeds are hypoglycaemic. In France hypoglycaemic drug from seeds has been prepared. | ||||

Pharmacological effect | Aqueous extract of the seeds has been found to cause decrease in blood sugar. Oral administration had no such effect. The chloroform fraction of the seed extract possesses a potent anti-inflammatory action against both exudative and proliferative and chronic phases of inflammation, besides exhibiting significant anti-arthritic and antipyretic properties. The seed extract also possesses analgesic activity. Experiments carried out at the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow show that the oral administration of dried alcoholic extracts of the seeds to diabetic patients reduces the level of blood sugar and glycosuria. Fresh seeds are superior to the dried ones in this respect. The fruits have also been used in the treatment of diabetes. | ||||

Traditional usage | 1. Seed kernel of Jambu (Syzygium cumini), Amra (mango), Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Kapittha (Feronia limonia) and Sunthi (dry ginger) this formulation should be taken with liquid gruel. It checks diarrhoea/diarrhea. 2. Tender Bilva fruit is cooked while being wrapped with the leaves of Jambu, Dadima (Punica granatum), Srngata (Trapa natan), Patha (Cissampelos pariera) etc. It should be kept overnight and then taken with jaggery and Sunthi. It checks all types of diarrhoea and alleviates severe "Grahani" (irritable bowels). 3. Juice extracted from the pounded leaves of Jambu, Amra and Amalaka (Phyllanthus emblica) should be mixed with goat's milk and honey. It checks diarrhoea with blood. 4. Bark of Sallaki (Boswellia serrata), Badari (Ziziphus mauritiana), Jambu, Priyala (Buchnania lanzan), Amra, Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) separately is mixed with ample honey and taken with milk. It checks diarrhoea with blood. 5. In intrinsic haemorrhage/hemorrhage, one should take cold infusion of Jambu, Amra, Arjuna or juice of Udumbara (Ficus glomerata) fruit. 6. One should take cold decoction of the tender leaves of Jambu and Amra mixed with honey. 7. Intake of cold decoction of tender leaves of Jambu and Amra, Usira (Vetivera zizanioides), leaf buds and hanging roots of Vata (Ficus benghalensis) mixed with honey alleviates, vomiting, fever, diarrhoea, fainting and severe thirst. 8. Powder or Jambu and Badara seeds can be taken for vomiting caused by Kapha. 9. One should take cooled decoction of tender leaves of Jambu and Amra mixed with honey and powder of parched paddy. This is good for vomiting with diarrhoea. 10. Juice of Jambu fruit or vinegar prepared of Jambu fruits is useful. 11. Tender leaves of Jambu, Amra, Haridra (turmeric), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) and new jaggery are pounded with curd water and applied on the face for freckles. 12. For wound healing, powder of Arjuna, Udumbara, Asvattha (Ficus religiosa), Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa), Jambu, Katphala (Myrica esculenta) is beneficial. 13. In opthalmia neonatorum decoction of Jambu, Amra, Amalaka and Asmantaka (Ficus rumphii) is used for washing and sprinkling in the eyes. 14. By filling the ears with the juice of the leaves and ripe fruits of Jambu the maggots are expelled from ears. 15. Juice of Jambu bark mixed with equal quantity of goat's milk is beneficial. | ||||

Comments | Mahajambu, Ksudra jambu, Kaka jambu, Bhumi jambu, Raja jambu, Jala jambu are few other names given to the varieties of Jambu by most of the classical authors. Synonyms like Krsna phala, Nila phala, Syamala denote the bluish black colour of the fruit. Kaka jambu, Sukapriya indicates the fruits are liked by birds. This is included in Mutra samgrahaniya, Purisa virajaniya, Chardi nigrahana gana of Caraka and Nyagrodhadi of Susruta. It is also one among the Panca pallava (a group of five leaves). | ||||
