Common usesStem is used in bilious fever, rheumatism, general debility, seminal weakness, splenic diseases, urinary and skin affections, and in purification of blood.

Fresh plant is considered more efficacious. The plant is used in Ayurvedic rasayanas to improve immune system and bodily resistance against infections. It is used for preparing a kind of starch known as Guduci satva or sat giloe. It is used as tonic and is indicated in several diseases causing debility.

Pharmacological effectThe drug is reported to possess one fifth of an analgesic effect of sodium salicylate. Its aqueous extract has a high phagocytic index. The plant extract is used as immuno-modulator in immunosuppression of obstructive jaundice, hepatic fibrosis, peritonitis and sepsis. The plant has been found to be effective in preventing fibrous changes and promotes regeneration of liver against CC14 induced hepato-toxicity.

Traditional usage1. Guduci (Tinospora cordifolia) powder along with jaggery, honey is taken as a rejuvenative.

2. Juice of Guduci taken is good as a rejuventive. While consuming this one should take ghee with soup.

3. Juice along with honey and rocksalt mixed well and applied as a collyrium to eyes for many eye diseases like cataract, pterygium, itching of eyes, diseases affecting the white portion and black portion.

4. Decoction of the cold infusion of Guduci should be taken for fever.

5. Juice of Guduci and Satavari (Asparagus racemosus) in equal quantity mixed with jaggery alleviates fever caused by Vata.

6. Guduci juice also checks fever caused by Vata.

7. Juice of Guduci mixed with Pippali (Piper longum) powder removes fever.

8. Cold infusion of Guduci mixed with sugar alleviates fever caused by Pitta. Similarly that of Vasa removes cough, intrinsic haemorrhage/hemorrhage and fever.

9. Decoction of Guduci, Parpata (Fumaria vailantii) and Amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica) overcomes fever caused by Pitta.

10. Oil cooked with powder of Katuka (Picrorhiza kurroa) or leaves of Guduci or Sahadevi (Vernonia cineria) juice alleviates fever.

11. Decoction of Triphala* (a group of three fruits) or juice of Guduci is useful in irregular fever.

12. One should take the decoction of Guduci, Nimba (neem) (neem), Amalaka mixed with honey.

13. Ghrta and oil cooked with juice and paste of Guduci, Triphala*, Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), Draksa (raisins) and Bala (Sida retusa) alleviates fever.

14. Decoction of Guduci added with Pippali powder destroys chronic fever and Kapha. Similarly does that of big Pancamula (a group of five roots).

15. Cold infusion of Guduci alleviates chronic fever.

16. One should use Guduci juice mixed with Pippali powder and honey. It destroys chronic fever, Kapha, spleen enlargement, cough and anorexia.

17. In case of vomiting in fever, cold decoction of Guduci mixed with honey should be taken.

18. Leaves of Guduci should be used as vegetable in fever.

19. One suffering from jaundice should take buffallo's ghee cooked with Guduci juice and milk. He should also take, after unction, Trivrt (Operculina turpethum) with Amalaka juice.

20. The patient of jaundice should take cooled decoction of Triphala* or Guduci or Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) or Nimba (neem) mixed with honey in morning.

21. One suffering from jaundice should take paste of Guduci leaves with buttermilk.

22. Syrup of Guduci removes thirst.

23. Cold infusion of Guduci mixed with honey is beneficial in all the three types of thirst.

24. Decoction of Guduci, Triphala*, Nimba (neem), Patola (Trichosanthes cucumerina) mixed with honey and sugar alleviates vomiting and acid gastritis.

25. Vomiting is checked by cooled decoction of Guduci or Bilva (Aegle marmelos) bark mixed with honey or Durva (Cynadon dactylon) with rice water.

26. Cold infusion of Guduci mixed with honey checks even severe vomiting caused by three dosas.

27. Decoction of Guduci, Nimba (neem) and Patola leaves are mixed with honey alleviates varied forms of severe acid gastritis.

28. Oil cooked with Guduci decoction and milk or Draksa decoction or decoction of Madhuka (liquorice) and Kasmari (Gmelina arborea) alleviates arthritic conditions.

29. One should take ghee or milk cooked with Guduci decoction for arthritic conditions.

30. Guduci is useful in arthritic conditions, filaria, vomiting, jaundice and obesity.

31. Decoction prepared with 30 gm of Guduci, Sunthi (dry ginger) and Dhanyaka (coriander) alleviates arthritic conditions, rheumatic fever and all types of skin diseases.

32. By regular use of juice, paste, powder of decoction of Guduci for a long time one is freed from arthritic conditions.

33. Guduci pacifies Vata and Pitta, dries up Kapha and adipose tissue alleviates arthritic conditions and destroys scabies and erysipelas.

34. Guduci taken with ghee pacifies Vata, with jaggery removes constipation, with sugar alleviates Pitta, with honey Kapha, mixed with castor oil destroys arthritic conditions and with ginger controls rheumatic fever.

35. Decoction of Guduci, Eranda (castor) and Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) mixed with castor oil controls generalized arthritic condition.

36. The patient should take juice or decoction or ghee cooked with that every morning. In afternoon, should eat rice with ghee and Amalaka soup. In this way, becomes free from all types of skin diseases.

37. By taking juice or decoction of Guduci and after it is digested eating with ghee and soup one regains handsome physique even if having necrosed body.

38. Decoction of Guduci and Nimba (neem) or Khadira (Acacia catechu) and Indrayava (Holarrhena pubescens) destroys eruptive boils.

39. For Vata located in heart, one should take Guduci and Marica (black pepper) pounded together with hot water in morning.

40. Juice of Guduci with milk is good for longevity, digestive power, voice and intellect.

41. Fine powder of Guduci mixed with jaggery, honey and ghee each should be taken according to digestive power keeping on light and wholesome diet. Thus one does not fall prey to diseases and senility.

42. Decoction of Katuka or Guduci and Saptaparna (Alstonia scholaris) with Sunthi is taken for purifying breast milk.

43. Specific regimen of buttermilk with Guduci is beneficial for piles.

44. Juice of Amalaka and Guduci mixed with honey is useful for diabetic types.

45. For meno-metrorrhagia caused by Vata juice of Vasa or Guduci is useful.

46. Intake of the root of Guduci with rice water alleviates splenomegaly.

47. Regular use of Guduci juice mixed with oil destroys filaria.

48. Decoction of Guduci and Triphala* added with Pippali powder and honey alleviates all types of eye diseases.

49. Guduci juice 10 gm, honey and rocksalt 1 gm, should be rubbed together and used as collyrium. It alleviates dirt, pterygium, defects of vision, cataract and itching.

"Tri" means three in Sanskrit and Triphala* literally means three fruits: Amalaki, (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). Triphala is classically recommended to maintain regular bowel movements.

CommentsGuduci sattva, an extract of the plant is sweet, light, increasing digestive fire, good for eye, increasing all body tissues, intellect, stabilizing aging, good for arthritic conditions, all the 3 dosas, anaemic/anemic conditions, high fever, vomiting, old fever, jaundice, diabetic types, lack of appetite, respiratory disorders, hiccough, piles, emaciation, burning, urinary disorders, menorrhagia, spermatorrhoea/spermatorrhea, urinary crystals. Leaves are astringent, hot, pungent, and bitter, increases digestive fire, strengthening, constipative and pacifying all the three dosas. Fruits are aphrodisiac and Vata Pitta pacifying.

Along with jaggery, Guduci is taken for constipation; along with sugar it is good for Pitta, with honey for Kapha, with ghee for Vata and with ginger for rheumatic fever.

This is included in Vayahsthapana, Dahaprasamana, Trsnanigrahana, Stanyasodhana, Trptighna groups of Caraka and Guducyadi, Patoladi, Aragvadhadi, Kakolyadi, Vallipancamula gana of Susruta.

RemarksStem is widely used in many Ayurvedic and Unani formulations like ''Dia-Dev'' used for diabetes, ''Septillin'' given for bacterial infection, ''Livfit'' and ''Phalatrikadi kasaya'' used against jaundice and ''M2tone'' for hypogonadism. The drug is also an ingredient of fortified Ayurvedic formula Raktavardhaka given in chronic fatigue syndrome, anaemia/anemia and depression; it is a constituent of the drug Curill - having antipyretic activity; a constituent of BR16A (Mentat) for mental retardation, cerebral deficiency and behavioural disorders. The plant is one of the constituents of Liv-52, a popular formulation.
