Common uses | Fruit rind is astringent, digestive, cardiotonic, stomachic and is highly effective in chronic diarrhoea/diarrhea and dysentery, dyspepsia, colitis, piles and uterine disorders. This has long been esteemed as food and medicine and as a diet in convalescence after diarrhoea. The powdered drug boiled with buttermilk is an efficacious remedy for infantile diarrhoea. Fruit juice is costive, refrigerant, tonic and good for diarrhoea, dyspepsia, fever, biliousness and excessive thirst. | |||||

Pharmacological effect | Extracts of the whole fruit were highly active against Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. They were also very effective against intestinal pathogenic bacilli such as Salmonella typhosa, S. montevideo, S. schottmuelleri, Shigella paradvsenteriae B.H. and S. paradysenteriae 111-z. Alcoholic extract of the fruit rind showed activity against Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus. Extracts of the fruit rind at a concentration of 10g./litre are reported to show positive inhibition against the fungi Piricularia oryzae and Collitotrichum falcatum. | |||||

Traditional usage | 1. Fruit juice of Dadima (Punica granatum) along with honey is good for diarrhoea/diarrhea. 2. In severe fever caused by Pitta one should take parched grain flour mixed with fruit juice of Dadima. 3. Decoction of the bark of Dadima and Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica) mixed with honey checks severe diarrhoea with blood immediately. 4. In case of dysentery, the patient should take diet consisting of vegetables prescribed in constipation, meat soups with profuse fat and processed with curd and pomegranates and Sali rice cooked with sesamum, black gram or green gram. 5. Ripe fruit of Dadima should be cooked in close heating. The juice so extracted checks all types of diarrhoea. 6. Fruit rind of Dadima is used as decoction for bleeding piles. 7. Decoction of Kutaja bark and Mustaka (Cyperus rotundus) checks bleeding. Similarly acts the fruit rind of Dadima and Mustaka and also Candana (sandal). 8. Ghrta (Ghee) cooked with pomegranate juice and Yavaksara (alkali of Hordeum vulgare) checks bleeding and pain. 9. Linctus made of Dadima seeds, Jiraka (cumin) and Nagakesara (Mesua ferrea) mixed with sugar and honey alleviates excessive thirst. 10. The paste of sarkara (jaggery) and Dadima or Draksa (grapes) and Dadima should be kept in the mouth. It removes dryness and tastelessness of mouth. 11. After food, wine scum of Dadima juice or decoction of Pancamula* or infusion of Dhanyaka (coriander) and Sunthi (dry ginger) should be given to quench thirst. 12. After observing fast, churned drink rough, sweetened with honey and sugar, slightly soured with Dadima and Amalaka (Phyllanthus emblica) and added with Parusaka (Grewia asiatica), Mrdvika (grapes) and Kharjura (date) should be given along with boiled water. 13. In freckles, fresh rind of Dadima with goat's milk should be applied. 14. In case of anorexia, soups mixed with sour juice of Dadima are wholesome. 15. Infusion of fruit rind of Dadima mixed with sugar should be taken for gonorrhoea/gonorrhea. 16. In soft chancre, scrotum should be dusted with the powder of the leaves of Bandhuka (Pentapetes phoenicea) and bark of Dadima or the paste of Puga fruit should be applied. Pancamula*, a group of five roots of Salaparni, Prsniparni, Brhati, Kantakari and Goksura, used for the treatment of all major fevers. | |||||

Comments | There are 3 different types of fruits according to Ayurveda. Sweet, sweet and sour, sour. - The sweet one pacifies all the three dosas, it is good for thirst, burning, fever, heart diseases, throat diseases, disorders in the mouth. This increases reproductive tissue and is light. It has also got mild astringent taste. It is constipative, unctuous, increasing intellect and strength. - The sweet and sour variety is appetising, increases digestive fire, increases pitta slightly, light. - The sour one increases Pitta pacifies morbidity of Vata and Kapha. This also increases blood disorders. Synonym, Dantabija denotes teeth like appearance of fruit inside, Lohitapuspaka due to red flower, Bijapurakam due to multiple seeds, Raktabija owing to red seeds, Sukavallabha - liked by parrots, Vrttaphala - round shape of the fruit, Nilapatra - bluish tinge on the leaves. Dadima is included in Hrdya and Chardinigrahana gana by Caraka and Parusakadi by Susruta. | |||||
